But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth. – Acts 1:8

In Quaker tradition, a witness is a way of living, rather than speaking or even being one who speaks.

A witness and a testimony are the same: simplicity, honesty, equality, community, peace are central to the faith.

A witness or a testimony (they are the same) is a living model, an example of what the Holy Spirit directs for us.

Or, in the wonderful quotation attributed to Francis of Assisi, “Preach the Gospel at all times. If necessary, use words.”

This is he who is the Resurrection and the Life, in all that do believe in his Light, as ’tis recorded concerning him. Therefore whilst ye have the Light, believe in the Light (saith Christ) that ye may become Children of the Light. (Elizabeth Bathurst, 1655?-1685)
