And the LORD shall be seen over them, and his arrow shall go forth as the lightning: and the Lord GOD shall blow the trumpet, and shall go with the whirlwinds of the south. The LORD of hosts shall defend them. – Zechariah 9:14-15

I had a Baptist friend who’d look at me incredulously – and later express total bafflement – when I mentioned that I feel a particular leading or divine prompting or hear a voice of instruction. It becomes too easy for many who preach the Bible to turn the Word of God – which is nothing less than Christ Himself – into the word of God, which is only a very special book – one that can help guide us and keep us on track, but one that must also be read only in the Light that Christ gives us. These are essential distinctions. Failing to see them leads people into the “words of human wisdom” where “the cross of Christ be emptied of its power.” Very quickly, thereafter, we find ourselves using Scripture to define and delimit the divine – that is, to try to tell God what He is supposed to be and do! – and also to confine ourselves once again in legalisms and phariseeism. Remember, the book can never do what the person of Christ can perform. (Thee knows, I hope, that I hold that book above all others – and am extremely happy that thy family has drilled it thoroughly into thee and thy brother and sister.)

This is he, who hath discovered himself to be God manifest in the Flesh; and also doth manifest himself in our mortal Flesh, in which we dwell. (Elizabeth Bathurst, 1655?-1685)
