Suppose I had gone to law school, after all, or married my college sweetheart, for instance? Or stayed in the Midwest all along, and how would that have shaped my spiritual growth or writing? The truth is that I never would have ventured into yoga or from there into Quakers.
How did others wind up here? (Zen Buddhism, for instance, talks of the importance of the Void. Suppose that includes a feeling of emptiness or adequate free time?)
Were seeds planted early and deep? Have some found their spiritual growth prompted by political protests, scientific research, or artistic endeavors?
So we’re here, far from what I’d anticipated. There’s fresh deep snow to shovel and more firewood to bring in. I didn’t have either of those on the horizon right after college.
